It is quite feasible to imagine that the mesenchyme surrounding the developing epididymis might vary in its instructive properties that effect not only cell proliferation, but also coiling and differentiation of the epithelia. Presumably, cell proliferation is the major contributor of Wolffian duct growth and results not only in duct lengthening but also duct thickening (Dyche, 1979) both of which are highly coupled to coiling ability.
